How to Make Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a very specific ingredients used in recipes for cakes, biscuits, waffles and cookies. Buttermilk adds a unique flavor to the recipe. You can also drink it. If you need for one recipe, why not do it yourself rather than buying? To make your own buttermilk, you just need a few ingredients and a few minutes. Here's the recipe:

* Buy the ingredients. To make buttermilk, all you need is whole milk and cream or lemon juice. Many grocery stores, especially small, do not have buttermilk in stock. With whole milk and lemon juice, you will avoid to look everywhere. You can also find cultured buttermilk in some specialty grocery stores.

* Mix the buttermilk. Add a tablespoon of cream or lemon juice for each cup of whole milk. You can mix it directly into the milk carton or in a bowl. If you make a lot of buttermilk, you can reduce the amount of lemon juice or cream. If you use cultured buttermilk, use four times more than whole milk buttermilk culture.

* Wait. Stir the mixture and let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. Then stir again. You will notice that the milk begins to curdle and thicken. The lactic acid in the cream and lemon juice is what turns milk into buttermilk.

* Serve or store. Use buttermilk or use it in your recipe or refrigerate. You can keep for several weeks. The date on milk is a good estimate of the storage time. As is easy to do, you do not need to make large quantities and stored.

Buying a whole carton of buttermilk makes no sense, especially because it is very easy to do at home, and many recipes use only one small amount. Rather than buy and the mess, do it when you need it.
